There is a lot of snow just about everywhere this year. Here in Island Park we almost have 5 feet on the ground with another foot supposed to be coming in the next couple days. Winter is finally getting old for me but I am not in it like many animals in the ecosystem. ⁠

Many of these animals are feeling the effects of this long winter right now they are at the toughest point. They are struggling to find food, get through the snow, and there will be those that succumb to the winter. ⁠

That is part of the cycle of life, as these animals start to succumb to winter other will take advantage of that. I just read a report that the first grizzly of the year was seen eating from a bison carcass in a remote area of Yellowstone.⁠

The last grouse I have a photo of is the ruffed grouse, like the dusky grouse it is found in conifer forests. It also does not have a lek but will have logs that it will stand on in the spring time and drum its wings. Often you actually feel the pounding in your chest before you actually hear it. In conjunction with the drumming it will display "ruffing" up the feathers around its neck. ⁠

In this photo he is not on full display but you can see a hint of his air sacks. During this display he will make low hoot calls to draw females in to him. ⁠
