Every time I come up to this spot with guests on tour I cant help but get a smile on my face. It still excites me just the way it did 20 years ago when I was 15. I think it is partially the anticipation, what are we going to see. Is the valley filled with bison, are grizzly bears out feeding, are the wolves on the move?⁠

I have talked to many people who would like to see a moose when they visit Yellowstone. There is actually a new exhibit in Yellowstone the "Moose Exhibit" between Norris and Mammoth. Sadly if you visit Yellowstone you are more than likely not going to see a moose. If you do it will most likely be along Soda Butte Creek from the fall to spring. ⁠

On the other hand Grand Teton National Park has more than its fair share of Moose. Although the fall and winter are the best times to see them you can find them throughout the year. ⁠

After a couple inches of snow last night, It looks like it is finally here to say. It is only partially the snow that pushes the bear into hibernation. The lack of food is why the bears go into hibernation and usually the cold and snow coincide with that time. ⁠

This was definitely in my top 10 wolf encounters. ( I have had some good ones and most of them tend to be in the winter.) ⁠

A couple of things made this one stick out first being the group I was with willing to stick around the same area all day patiently waiting. Often times people, even photographers don't have the patience it takes to have an encounter like this. Second was the fact that he was not too far off and started howling for us. I have heard a lot of wolves howl but none that were this close. ⁠
