Here is another of the same swan family from yesterday. Having swans successfully nesting in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem is a big success. The swan population has dwindled over the years and there is a lot of work being done to boost their population.

I mentioned there would be a few bird photos this week. It was a pleasure to watch and photograph a couple different trumpeter swan families close to home in 2020. Actually in a place just up the trail from my last three posts. ⁠

I don't remember the exact count although I believe it 3 maybe 4 successful trumpeter swans nests in this area last year. Two pairs had five cygnets, one pair had four, and it seems like there was another successful pair that I cant remember. ⁠

I watched this between two days for about 10 hours hoping to watch the second egg hatch. Can you see the egg? Unfortunately I missed it hatching but did get to watch the two young colts wander around for a day or two before they moved on. ⁠

If you saw my last two posts I mentioned a small pond off to the side a trail. Well right across the trail from the small pond was a larger pond and this sandhill crane nest was on the edge of that pond. It was nice to go back and forth (cautiously) between the two spots and enjoy a variety of species. ⁠

You see an above average of bird posts this next week or two. Yellowstone had a slow start to the 2020 Summer season which gave me more time for myself. As part of that I spent a lot of time at a state park close to home. ⁠

The waterfowl opportunities were great during this time. On either side of a trail I frequented were some ponds. The smaller pond had a couple ducks at a time hanging out, usually goldeneyes, American widgeons, and cinnamon teals. I would lay down and army crawl to the edge of the pond to try and have the opportunity to photograph the ducks at eye level. Most the time it worked out until it came to the goldeneyes who seemed to catch on to what was going on. This one pictured here is a cinnamon teal. ⁠

One of the highlights from this last year was watching a big ol' grizzly bear lounge on the bank of the Yellowstone River. (Take a look back in my feed if you missed that). While sitting along the rivers edge for endless hours while the bear was sleeping there seemed to always be something going on. ⁠

One day just around the bend from all the photographers swans were being released along the river. Every year they release trumpeter swans to try and support our dwindling population. ⁠
